Boomer Rock Trivia – March 23 – Hooray a Winner!

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Yes! We finally got a winner in our Kinks Fan Club challenge question.  The unnamed, no-city-specified winner, (however, we’re guessing NYC) said “Chas Chandler, formerly of the Animals, found ex-GI Jimi Hendrix and took him to England. Chas played bass, Jimi guitar.”

YUP!…. but STILL no answer on the Mosrite or Richard Valenzuela questions…

Here we go for today…  name the band, and the drummer who called his band’s 1969 tour the “Led Zeppelin” tour.  Extra credit if you can tell us why he called it that.

Boomer Rock Trivia – March 16

Friday, March 16th, 2007

A Special Welcome to those of you in the Kinks Fan Club.  (Says your official, so we’ll buy that.)  We’re that “goofball little blog” you’ve heard about.  Sorry that our questions are so easy for you… (ahem, although we still have a couple UNANSWERED… then again Kinks fans might not be into Mosrites or Ritchie Valens).

OK, this one involves a Brit that ran across an ex-US Soldier in Greenwich Village and spirited him away to London to become the wildman of pop.

Name them, the instruments they played and the Brit’s former band.

PS Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE the Kinks… even play some of them.

Colorado Boomers Survey

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Colorado Boomers: take 10 minutes for a worthy cause.  If you are between 55 and 65, and live in Colorado, there is a survey at www.coloradoboomers.org that can really help a couple of worthwhile organizations.  Singosaurus Duck says it’s easy and takes no time at all. The survey will only be available until March 23.

Lamba Answer

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

kbr-lambda.jpg

The Lamba is a 1979 vintage Korg polyphonic synthesizer, officially model number ES-50.  Because it was built in 1979 and because it is pro gear, not a home model, there are no speakers.  Funkysaurus Tom brought this one home from an auction for $5 and passed it along to Singosaurus Duck.  Why only $5?  Because the people at the auction thought is was BROKEN because no sound came out when they turned it on…

Duh!

Thanks, Tom!  We’re actually having a lot of fun with it.  A few minor tweaks and Duck can get some cool sounds… or at least really close.  A Farfisa combo, a Vox Continental, a Hohner Clavinet…

No MIDI but some great vintage analog stuff.  Thanks to James at Carbon111.com, I even have a manual and schematics.  Carbon111.com by the way is a really cool sight for keyboard freaks.   For more info about the Lambda, including some sound samples visit http://www.carbon111.com/lambda.html

Boomer Rock Trivia – March 12 – Hockey Stick Answer!

Monday, March 12th, 2007

The Fender Guitar announced in ’65 with the “Hockey Stick” headstock, was the Fender XII.  Here’s what one looks like.

fenderxii-320.jpgSome interesting answers to stuff coming in…  Lambda is indeed a Greek Letter, but it’s NOT the answer we’re looking for…  to those of you living in Wyoming, it also has nothing to do with sheep.  Confidential to Wakeup in Los Angeles…  if you’re just now responding to the quiz of February 21, Theramin is correct, although you don’t get any points because the answer was already posted ;-) … however, if you’re saying that a Lambda is a Theramin…  BUZZ_Z_Z_Z_Z_Z_Z  Nope!

You’ve been given a great hint!  We’ll keep Lambda open a couple more days.

For today….  which of the following is NOT on Ritchie Valens Greatest Hits?

  • La Bamba
  • Donna
  • Bonie Maronie
  • Come On Let’s Go

Boomer Rock Trivia – March 10

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

Finally got correct answers on a couple of outstandings.  Sorry, no westerners this time, honors go back to New York.

Elvis Aaron Presley… (spelled Aron at birth but… officially Aaron according to the Estate and his gravestone).  Extra credit to Holly for mentioning the ‘Aron’ spelling.  Holly also hammered ALL of the Marks into the right bands…  Lindsay, Paul Revere and the Raiders; Bolan, T-Rex; Farner, Grand Funk Railroad; and Knopfler, Dire Straits.

Still no correct answers on the Hockey Stick Fender… I’m going to give that one a couple more days…. or the Lambda.  (A couple of comments on the Lambda Report, but we won’t go there.)  We’ll go some more time on that one as well.

For today.  Name the album which featured a photograph of a brand new line of Mosrite guitars on the cover… oh, and the guys that played them.

Boomer Rock Trivia – March 4

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

Happy Birthday Lyssa in St. Cloud Minnesota… hope it’s finally warming up for you!

Some good guesses, but no answers yet on the last three questions.  Have you noticed that Boomer hasn’t posted them either?  New strategy.  Since the RSS feeds for Boomer’s blog sometimes take a while to float through cyberspace… Technorati, MyBlogLog, Google, Yahoo, MSN and other places, we’re holding off on posting the answers until someone gets it right.  This allows more time to get involved.  We’d love to give out prizes, but you know how it is for starving musicians…

Confidential to a guitar player I know…  regarding the quiz on the Hockey Stick (OK Boomer screwed up and orginally put “puck” instead of stick) head stock.  The last thing I was aware of is that Jackson, Charvel and Epiphone are not FENDER guitar models…  ok so Fender owns the Jackson and Charvel brands at this point, but not in ’65, and Epi is a Gibson brand.

Here’s another clue about the hockey stick head… there’s a couple of pictures of Pete Townshend playing one on an unofficial Who website.  (Geeze, ya didn’t think I’d give ya the link, did ya?)

While you’re thinking on that one, here’s a new one along the subject of Mark Stein…

OK, we revealed a couple of days ago that Mark Stein played with Vanilla Fudge.  Here are some more Marks (and one Marc)…  name their bands…

  • Mark Farner
  • Mark Knopfler
  • Mark Lindsay
  • Marc Bolan
